Diamond Head – Lightning To The Nations (Self-released, 1980)

diamond head lightning to the nations

This total classic of an album is one of my fave N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) releases. It’s a real shame Diamond Head were never as popular as, for example, Iron Maiden (who also came from the N.W.O.B.H.M. movement). The songs on this release are just awesome, I’ve seen interviews with guitarist Brian Tatler where he speaks about them spending LOTS of time perfecting their songs when they started out, and it shows!

Metallica have, at various times throughout their career, covered five of the seven songs featured on this album. The most famous, of course, is their cover of “Am I Evil?“, which is generally better known to Thrashers than the original.

The original release was known as The White Album, as it was released in a plain white sleeve with no tracklist or information. The first pressing of 1,000 were sold at gigs and through the British music magazine Sounds. The covers were signed by one or all of the band members.

There’s been various remasters / remixes done of the album, but none of them sound as good as the original. If you want a copy of the first pressing, there’s one on sale on Discogs.com for £350.00!

My fave songs from this album are The Prince, Sweet And Innocent, and Lightning To The Nations.
